Garden City Senator Joins Orman’s Independent Campaign for Kansas Governor

Orman, who has challenged special-interest allegiances of both major political parties, launched his campaign for governor in late January. The independent bid allows Orman to avoid the Republican and Democratic primaries and appear on the general election ballot in November, as long as he collects 5,000 signatures of registered voters by Aug. 6.

Doll, 60, is a former teacher and basketball coach who grew up in a cattle ranching family. He’s now abandoning the Republican Party to join Orman’s campaign because, he said in a campaign news release, he believes the Johnson County businessman’s freedom from party politics would make him a better governor.
“The only master he will serve is the people of the state of Kansas,” Doll said in the release.

Independent Kansas gubernatorial candidate Greg Orman announced Tuesday that State Sen. John Doll of Garden City will join his independent ticket for governor.
Doll also announced that he will switch his voter registration from Republican to independent, and has notified the Senate Republican Leadership of his decision to leave the party.

John Doll, Garden City, both visited the Finney County Clerk's office in Garden City Wednesday, where Doll formally changed his political party affiliation from Republican to unaffiliated. The two embarked on a campaign swing in southwest Kansas that will continue Thursday with stops to include Dodge City.
